Students Corner: How Gender Issues Affect Ghana’s Progress towards Meeting Sustainable Development Goals Related to Health

Learn about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to health and how gender issues can affect Ghana’s ability to meet these goals. This article discusses concrete examples and strategies for promoting gender equality and improving health outcomes in Ghana.

There are several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to health, but the most relevant ones for this question are SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, and SDG 5: Gender Equality.

SDG 3 aims to “ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.” This includes reducing maternal and child mortality, preventing and treating communicable and non-communicable diseases, and strengthening health systems. Achieving SDG 3 is crucial for sustainable development, as good health is essential for economic growth, poverty reduction, and social well-being.

SDG 5 aims to “achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.” This includes ending discrimination and violence against women, ensuring access to sexual and reproductive health and rights, and promoting women’s participation and leadership in all spheres of life. Achieving SDG 5 is crucial for sustainable development, as gender equality is essential for social justice, economic growth, and environmental sustainability.

In Ghana, there are several gender issues that can affect the country’s ability to meet these SDGs related to health. Here are some concrete examples:

  1. Maternal and child health: According to the World Health Organization, Ghana has made significant progress in reducing maternal and child mortality rates over the past few decades. However, there are still significant gender disparities in access to maternal and child health services. For example, women in rural areas and poor households are less likely to receive antenatal care, skilled delivery, and postnatal care. This is due to a range of factors, including limited access to health facilities, cultural beliefs and practices, and financial constraints. Additionally, women and girls in Ghana often face social and economic barriers to accessing education and employment, which can limit their ability to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.
  2. HIV/AIDS: Ghana has made progress in reducing the prevalence of HIV/AIDS, but the disease remains a major public health challenge. Women and girls are particularly vulnerable to HIV/AIDS due to biological and social factors, including gender-based violence, lack of access to education and economic opportunities, and limited control over their own bodies and sexual health. In addition, gender norms and stereotypes can perpetuate stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS, further exacerbating the problem.
  3. Mental health: Mental health is an often-neglected aspect of health care in Ghana, with limited resources and facilities for diagnosis and treatment. Women and girls are particularly vulnerable to mental health issues due to gender-based violence, social and economic inequality, and cultural stigma. For example, depression is a common mental health condition among women in Ghana, but it is often not recognized or treated due to cultural beliefs and practices that discourage seeking help for mental health issues.

Overall, gender issues can have a significant impact on Ghana’s ability to meet the SDGs related to health. To address these issues, it is important to prioritize women’s and girls’ access to health care, education, and economic opportunities, as well as to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment more broadly. This can involve a range of strategies, including improving access to health services in rural and underserved areas, promoting gender-sensitive policies and programs, and engaging communities and stakeholders in efforts to advance gender equality and health.
