The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana (NMC) Reverts Verification Fee Increase

In a significant development, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana (NMC) has decided to suspend the staggering 445.5% increment in verification fees for nurses and midwives. This decision comes after widespread outcry and concerns raised by healthcare professionals across the country.

The NMC is seeking to increase the verification fee to a hefty sum of Ghs 3,000 instead of the usual Ghs 550. This sudden and substantial increase caused shockwaves within the healthcare community. Many professionals expressed their frustration, citing financial strain and the lack of transparency surrounding the decision.

Following an emergency meeting held on March 26, 2024, the 15th Governing Board of the NMC decided to revert to the previous fee structure. Nurses and midwives will now pay Ghs 550 for license verification—a relief for those who were burdened by the exorbitant fees.

In their press statement, the NMC emphasized their unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of training and practice in nursing and midwifery. The council recognizes the critical role these professionals play in the healthcare system and aims to support their growth and development.

As the NMC reviews its fee policies, nurses and midwives can breathe a sigh of relief. The decision to suspend the fee increase demonstrates responsiveness to the concerns of the healthcare workforce. However, vigilance remains crucial to ensure fair and transparent practices moving forward.
